Sure enough, the CD is warped. I like the product. Someone obviously returned this item because of the warped CD and Amazon resold it to me, with the warped CD and the sticky note, as new. But beware, Amazon sells used items as new. Proof: on the CD there was a stick-it note that said CD is warped. Further proof: the taped seal on the box was opened. Buyer beware.
The file structure is also a concern, especially if issues crop up with the unit. This product is well made and one month into using it everything seems to be working fine. Since it wipes drives upon install you're kind of screwed if the unit itself fails. It's very quiet, small and I am happy with it so far. The only critisism I would have would be the permissions and how they work with windows which can be confusing. I statically back up everything so I don't aticipate problems that way. I would have given straight 5's if not for this issue.
I have had this product for over a year and have had 0 issues. But I was impressed how it was able to re-build the drive without error. This capability makes it very flexible.
There have be 2 firmware updates since I have owned it, one addressing the issue of uPnP compatibility with xbox360. I hit rebuild from the web interface, and in about 2-3 hours, it had re-built the second drive. I have been using 2 640gb WD drives in Raid 1 configuration for my photos, mp3s, and music project backups.
I have also had an occurrence where, after upgrading the firmware, one of my two drives appeared to be in non-raid 1 configuration. Now it works great, I can access all of my music on this NAS through my xbox. You can also load extensions from funplug, which are various community created linux add-ons, such as SVN, telnet etc.
I'm not sure what happened, maybe some side effect of the update, but it surely wasn't my drive because it is working fine to this day. I am in fact contemplating getting a second unit, you just can't beat what you get for the price.
setting up the users and group is totally unexplained. I have 1 TB in each bay. Should the user on this device match up with windows accounts or they are independent. I have a mac laptop, 2 windows laptop (win7 and xp) connected to this.Pros:1. even on wired connection, it is slow.4. Doesn't get hot4. Although I copied my music there, not sure if this is usable.
Installation was easy5. Very quiet3. Does what it is supposed to - back it upCons:1. Backup software is very lame - doesnt work with win7 - i am in the process of looking for a decent - found one Commodo.
It has been 2-3 weeks since I got this installed. 3. Writing to the device is EXTREMELY SLOW if you are on wireless - no idea what causes this. User front-end app is pathetic.I am IT guy, and I find this configuration via front-end is a pain in the a**. iTunes Server is working and not working (). Body is plastic and especially the front cover comes off almost everytime I touch it.should have given a way to snap it so that it stays.6. Compact sized2. What is the group mean.
Tech support is terrible - goes to India and the guys are clueless.the guy who answered didnt even know what RAID 0 and 1 is - they put me on hold for 5 mts before they could provide a basic answer.2. - itunes recognizes it, but accessing this is EXTREMELY slow. 5. For a device that has been around for 3+ years from what I could tell, I would have expected a decent software to support the device.
The difference in the speed is very noticeable and this unit looks more robust. Well, so far so good. This unit replaced a Cisco/Linksys device that went bad. The only improvement I would ask for has to do with how it handles users and the assignment of shares. The Cisco/Linksys device was the same. This unit is definitely worth the price difference.
